NOTE: BAREFOOT HORSES may compete but shoes or boots are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The 2008 Pioneer Cabin Endurance Ride is Sept 13th and 14th in Helena Montana. Ride camp for the Pioneer Cabin Endurance Ride is on the beautiful RV Ranch, East of Birdseye Road.  The endurance ride begins at the ride camp. Pictures of the trail can be found here.

Cabin Picture The ride heads West and North across the RV Ranch, entering the Prickly Pear Ranch, and then goes back onto the RV Ranch. At the center of these loops the rider enters a small mystical forest area. In this magical area, there are several old pioneer roads that are overgrown and abandoned,  making grassy, sandy footing. The trail crosses a dramatic rocky steep ridge (rocks are the size of cars and houses), and drops down to the Priest Pass Road and then returns to the ride camp. The observant rider will notice several old mining cabins; some cabins marked only by a chimney or collapsed walls.  These old cabins are the inspiration for the name of this ride, “The Pioneer Cabin Endurance Ride”. One need not cross the Forest Service boundary to see the pioneer cabins, there are several cabins on BLM land at the edge of the Mystical Forest.

A native of the area spends much time visiting with medicine men and studying Indian history. He tells an interesting tale about this area. He says that Native Indians in the area used to come to this forest to train their Shamans.  Why? Because in this area the portal between the living and dead is either thin or open depending on the talents of the trainees. It is believed that if you believe, you can see images of past tribal members in some of the rock formations.

Juli at Portrait Tree Picture Native wildlife personally seen by those marking trail is: wolverine, elk, antelope, white tail deer, mule deer, moose, bobcat, skunks and porcupines. Scat has been seen of bear, mountain lion, coyote, raccoons and lynx. You get the drift, this is a special area and a special ride.

The Tri-Arabian Club is offering 25, 50 and 75-mile endurance rides on Saturday, September 13th; and  25 and 50-mile rides on Sunday September 14th. Riders will start vetting in about 4 pm on Friday, September 12th.

We are offering a Dinner Saturday night at the Awards Ceremony for $10.00 per person, price separate from entry.

Weed free hay will be available for purchase at the ride.

Mapquest directions are available here.  When you get close to ride camp, there will be signs to lead you in!  Be a true pioneer and be one of the first to experience the Pioneer Cabin Endurance Ride, a journey into the past!
